Dogs have a direct heritage to the wolves that used to cover a large part of the world ages ago. The connection between Man and dog was formed thousands of years ago, when dogs were initially used as beasts of burden and for security purposes. Even to this day, working breeds still exist, with their roles having largely extended to include aiding disabled people (such as the visually and hearing impaired), working alongside the police to detect banned drugs and illegal goods, and to find and rescue survivors. Their amazing sense of smell is also being put to good use in the medical field; dogs are now helping in early discovery of cancer cells in patients. At the end of the day, however, a dog’s main role will always be that of faithful and trusting companion.
